What is it? Depression is different from sadness. It's deeper and much harder to shake. Depression is that feeling you have when you are really down. You feel hopeless and unmotivated. It can be a really serious problem for people with low self esteem (those who don't like themselves).

Warning Signs

  • Change in your sleeping patterns. (Either sleeping too much or having trouble sleeping at all.)
  • Feeling overwhelmed by your sadness. (Crying uncontrollably and not knowing why.)
  • Feeling as if a dark cloud were hanging over you. (A sad mood that doesn't go away.)
  • Loss of interest in things or people you used to care about. (That can be hobbies, activities, friends.)
  • A change in your eating patterns. (Either eating too much or not being able to eat at all.)
  • Crankiness. (Everything irritates you.)
  • Excessive worrying over your physical health.

Depressed people may have thoughts of hurting themselves or committing suicide.

What to do. If you think you might be depressed or you know someone who is:

Get help as soon as possible!

This is very serious.

  • Talk to an adult you can trust. (Now!)
  • Let them refer you to a mental health professional.
  • Call the Suicide Prevention Hotline in the white pages of the phone book. (Every community has one.)

Or, if you live in North America, call
National 24 Hour Hopeline Network at
1-800-SUICIDE

(1-800-784-2433)

With help you can feel better than you do right now.
