                Happy New Year!
*************************************************************************

Hi all! Welcome to 1998!

Wouldn't it be great if all the issues that we address in our
conferences could be solved this year? For example, If racism could be
ended? If the problems of violence in relationships would cease? If
everybody suddenly saw the damage that pollution caused to the
environment and became environmentally responsible?

Sure it would be great - but the sad thing is, none of these things are
going to happen. We at The InSite are realistic enough to realize that
these problems will always be with us. We know that such changes take
place slowly, because it means that ingrained attitudes have to be
changed - and that is not an easy thing to do.

But we also know that the work that The InSite does is of great value.
If just one person walks away from one of our conferences with a deeper
insight into themselves and into the world around them, then we have had
a success. If, because of The InSite, one person is helped to overcome a
personal difficulty, then we have had a triumph.

It is you, our subscribers, who make these things possible. Without your
continued support, The InSite would not be able to continue with its
valuable work. We at The InSite wish you all the best for 1998, and hope
that you will continue to support The InSite throughout the year.

From Miguel's Journal

"When I asked her if she was okay, it seemed like she waited a long time
before she answered. Then she said she was fine. You know I know Dee and
there was something in the way she said, 'I'm fine' that made me think
that she was not fine. But I decided not to push her. I figured she'd
tell me when she was ready."

                                  ~o~

From Dee's Journal

"The next minute Miguel opened the car door and Juan started bopping to
the music as if nothing had happened in the five minutes he was gone. It
was like some crazy dream. Miguel got in the car, rain was dripping from
his hair. He was carrying a grocery bag. 'I bought some chocolate chip
cookies, Dee. Want one?'"
                                  ~o~

From Chaz's Journal

"I've been thinking a lot about what Miguel said. He's right, you know.
There's absolutely no reason for me to get into all these weirded out
head trips about making my relationship with Becca into something more
than it is before it's ready to become something more...

So I'm feeling really good. So good in fact, that I wrote a poem.... I'm
not going to show this one to Becca... but even though I might never
show it to her, it is for her, just the same..."

                                  ~o~

From Becca's Journal

"So I took a deep breath and told my parents the last part: that the
next time Chaz asked me out I was going to say 'Yes!'

That's when my father lost it. All of a sudden the rational thinker
became an irrational bigot!"

                                  ~o~

Uh oh! Chaz, Becca, Dee, and Miguel are finding out about life's
problems, and finding out about them very fast! You can help them! They
would welcome your advice!

And you can send them your advice! Visit the URL for The Story listed

A conversation with Olympic Gymnast, Jessica Davis

"Jessica fell in love with rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 7. She
trained to be the best in her nation and in 1996 was part of the United
States Women's Gymnastics team at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. What
did it take to get to the Olympics? What "normal" teen stuff did she
have to give up along the way? Jessica, now 19, has learned a lot about
setting goals and accomplishing them, not just in her sport, but in
life."

A conversation with a Special Olympics Athlete

"When Joey was in the third grade his Special Ed teacher got him
interested in The Special Olympics. He soon discovered how much he liked
competing in different sports and being part of a team. Now, at 34, Joey
still competes in Special Olympics year round, because it's so much fun
and because in Special Olympics, everyone is a winner."

                           Bits And Pieces
*************************************************************************

Hiya folks....

As most of our regular chatters are aware, there are two TheInSite
channels - #TheInSite and #TheInSite2. #TheInSite is our regular
conference room, and is used for scheduled conferences between 5 and 8
hours daily. It is envisaged that this number of daily scheduled
conferences will increase quite significantly this year.

Unfortunately, many of the people who visit #TheInSite do not understand
that #TheInSite is a conference room, and often unwittingly disrupt
conferences by assuming that the channel is for general chat. This has
become more marked since Christmas with the influx of so many WebTV new
users. While we welcome more users to the channel, the disruption that
this can cause decreases the quality of the conferences, and this is
something that we really do not want.

As a regular visitor to #TheInSite, you the subscriber can help to
maintain the quality of our conferences. If you find yourself chatting
to a new user before a scheduled conference is about to start, either
inform them about the conference, or gently inform them that a
conference is about to start, and that a general 24 hour-a-day chat
channel is available by typing /join #TheInSite2 While the hosts do
this as part of their duties, it is often better that the new chatter
receive this sort of advice from someone they are chatting to rather
than receive it from someone who appears to be an authority figure.

Thanks for your help! :)

               *~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*

That's it for this edition. Do your friends a favor - tell them about
The InSite and #TheInSite
