Valentine's Day will be here soon. It is always nice to receive a
reminder in the form of a card or a box of chocolates or a bunch of
flowers that someone loves you. To be loved is a beautiful thing.

There is a darker side to Valentine's Day unfortunately. There is a lot
of pressure surrounding Valentine's Day, especially for teens and young
adults. A person who does not receive a Valentine's Day greeting is
often considered somehow inferior -- there is something wrong with them
if they cannot attract at least one Valentine's Day greeting from an
admirer. This attitude is further fostered by the images and attitudes
of popular culture, particularly those portrayed in film and TV.

But is this true? Should a 12 year old girl have a boyfriend just
because her friends put pressure on her to do so? Should a fifteen year
old boy be called "gay" by his class just because he doesn't have a
girlfriend? (For that matter, why should "gay" be considered an insult?)
Why should a person's self esteem be at the mercy of the whims of the
crowd?

Should we not instead allow people to determine there own needs as far
as relationships go, rather than put pressure on them to accept a
situation for which they may be unprepared, and which may ultimately
cause them unnecessary emotional pain? The transition from childhood to
adulthood is fraught with difficulty -- let's not make it more difficult
for them by putting unnecessary and inappropriate pressure on them to
perform, simply because popular culture and peer group pressure would
have us believe "There's something wrong with you because you don't have
a relationship."

The Story The Story The Story The Story The Story The Story

                                  ~o~

Chaz's encounter with the homeless man has raised some uncomfortable
thoughts. He had always thought similar thoughts as those expressed by
the two well dressed women, but were their opinions the truth?

                                  -o-

Becca is also suffering some uncomfortable thoughts, but these are about
her mother. She loves her, of course, but she doesn't really like her.
And why does her mother only tell stories about her childhood when
Becca's father isn't around? And why did she lie about Chaz's phone
call?

                                  -o-

Uh oh! Dee has also had some uncomfortable thoughts. This time about
life and death. Her sister could laugh about the incident that provoked
these thoughts, but the incident made Dee extremely sad. Why?

                                  -o-

And why has Miguel been suspended from school? He hadn't been looking
for any trouble, in fact he'd been feeling great. Then *wham*! life took
an unexpected turn and here he was, on a two day suspension!

New Addition to the site! -------- New Addition to the site!

This week we have two new transcripts in the Transcripts section of The
InSite. With Valentine's Day coming up, what could be more appropriate
than a Hey Terra! transcript. Don't expect this to be a light and fluffy
look at Valentine's Day though -- Terra does not pull any punches when it
comes to matters of the heart!

                                  -o-

Also this week -- an excellent conference with Bill Arigi, a
psychotherapist in the field of addiction and recovery treatment. Don't
miss this transcript of an excellent conference! Here is an excerpt:

"....yes it is possible to get addicted to pot. You can tell by
tolerance which means they need more to get high, and by withdrawal,
meaning they can't go a long period of time without using. And more
importantly, their ability to relate to their family and friends
  diminishes."

Getting to Know The InSite Web site
*************************************************************************

Have you been trying to access the discussion boards at The InSite and
been greeted with a message that says the boards are down because of a
software problem? Yep -- it's annoying, especially if you want to see
your contribution to the discussions, or you want to browse the Hey
Terra! mail. However, the problem should be fixed soon, and the new
software being installed should make access to the boards a lot quicker.

We apologize for the delay -- but when the new software is installed, you
will agree -- the wait was worth it!

Congratulations are due to two of our hosts -- NerioTIS and MezzoTIS -- who
recently successfully completed their CCC training. NerioTIS will now be
known as VenusCCC, and MezzoTIS continues the musical theme of her
nicknames by becoming VivaCCCe.

Congratulations!!! :)
