D O W N E R S:
Rohypnol

What is it? Odorless and nearly tasteless, Rohypnol is a white tablet with the name Roche (pronounced "row shay") and an encircled 1 or 2 on one side and a single line or cross on the other side. Also known as "roofies," the "date rape drug," Rochies, La Rocha, Rope, Rib Roche, Rohypnol is a sedative ("downer") in the same family as Valium.

How does it make you feel? Roofies have the power of a knock-out punch that is felt within 20-30 minutes. 2 mg. (milligrams) of Rohypnol...

Can:

  • Impair your judgment (so you do things you wouldn't ordinary do)
  • Impair your motor skills (so you can't move)

Cause:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness
  • Amnesia. (So people who take roofies don't remember what happened to them when they were on it)

Typically a guy will slip a roofies into a girl's drink.

The girl will go unconscious and the guy will rape her.

What does it do to your body? Rohyphnol is a sedative and said to be ten times the strength of Valium. It's prescribed by doctors for short term treatment of severe sleep disorders. In addition to temporary amnesia, roofies causes muscle relaxation, sleep and the impairmeant of motor skills. When roofies is taken with alcohol and other drugs, the amnesia effect may be increased. Because it knocks you out, a girl under the influence of roofies can easily be sexually molested or raped. Strongest effects happen within one to two hours, but the overall sedative effects of roofies last 6-8 hours following a 2 mg. dose. Motor skills may be impaired for up to 12 hours.

How easy is it to become dependent? This is not a social drug that people use to get high. Most of the time, the person on roofies doesn't even know they've taken it. However, it is possible to become dependent on Rohypnol. If used in high dosages, one can become dependent within 45 days. If it is used for more than six months you can develop what is called "tissue dependence" - in other words, if you stopped using the drug, you'd show signs of withdrawal.

What is an overdose? An overdose from roofies alone is not lethal. When used in combination or mixed with alcohol, narcotics, or other downers, roofies abuse can be deadly. So, yes, it is possible to overdose on roofies. The primary experience would be of extreme fatigue which could lead to a coma and/or respiratory depression and death.

What is withdrawal like? With roofies withdrawal, one becomes very agitated, hyper, shaky, with increased heart rate, blood pressure, pulse rate. This could lead to seizures that could be life threatening.

Is it legal? Roofies are not manufactured or sold in the U.S. It is approved and sold in 64 other countries. The 2 mg. pill is being removed from the market to discourage abuse. Most of the roofies in the U.S. are being smuggled in from Mexico and Latin America.

Roofies is not a drug people choose to use.

Because it is so easy to sneak a roofies into someone's drink,
be alert to the dangers.
