Vaginitis


What is it? An infection of the vagina that has many causes. The most common are:

How do you get it? Vaginitis is transmitted from person to person in two ways:

  • Unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal) with someone who one of the above infections.
  • These vaginal infections also occur in women who have not had sexual contact. (How do they get them? Yeasts are airborne.)

What are the symptoms?

  • Change in vaginal discharge (more than usual, different color, bad smell)
  • Itching or burning in or near the vagina
  • It hurts to pee

How can you know for sure? A sample of the discharge is examined by a doctor under a microscope.

How is it treated? This depends on the type of infection. Either antibiotics, or vaginal creams, suppositories.

What can happen if you don't take care of it? Untreated, vaginitis will cause extreme discomfort which will get worse. It can spread to sexual partners.
